You don’t have a lighting system in your shed or garden shed but you would like to see something when you go to collect tools or tinker there? Or getting lighting when when you are going there? Getting electricity there is too complex or too expensive? If so, installing a solar powered lighting system is probably the solution.

But, before you get a solar shed light, what are the important criteria to consider?

  • The required lighting power
  • The number of hours of use
  • Lifespan and characteristics

1- The required lighting power

The luminous flux is one of the first things that you need to evaluate when buying a solar lighting system for a shed.

To calculate your lighting needs, look at the lumens, not the watts. Lumens represent the measure of the total amount of light produced. The higher the number of lumens, the more light is produced. Watts, on the other hand, indicate the amount of electrical energy a light consumes to produce this level of lighting.

Contrary to what many people may think about solar shed lights, the lighting power is not directly related to the size of the solar panels that power the light. These only determine the time required to recharge the battery (usually lithium or nickel).

The number of hours required to fully charge your battery is also an important factor to consider. If the product requires too many hours of sunshine during the day because it has a too small solar panel, it will be much more sensitive to unexpected cloudy conditions and this could result in a low charge on days with poor sunshine.

Some models of shed solar lights are designed for long-term lighting. For example, they automatically turn on at dusk and turn off at daybreak, or they have a wall switch or remote control that turns them on and off at will. Others are designed for short-term lighting and have a motion detector. They light up when motion is detected and stay on for a short time (usually 30 seconds to a few minutes). Finally, some models combine all of these options. In addition, some models allow you to modify the power of the lighting, which allows you to light longer at a lower intensity when required.

Therefore, the longer the duration of the lighting, the larger the size of the solar panel and the storage capacity of the battery.

3- Lifespan and characteristics

The lifespan of the battery and LED bulbs in the solar lighting system are very important details as they will dictate the period during which you can enjoy your purchase.

Battery life is usually measured in number of cycles. For example, a battery that has an estimated 2,000 cycles will last about 5 years if it is fully discharged and recharged on a daily basis. However, since it is unlikely that the battery will be fully discharged on a daily basis, its lifespan should be extended accordingly.

As for the life of the bulbs, it is expressed in hours.
