SOLAR POOL HEATERS – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Some questions come up regularly when people are considering buying a solar pool heating system. So we took the initiative to group them on this page.

Solar pool heater for swimming pool

What will be the temperature of my pool ?

Here is a graph that illustrates the difference in temperature between an unheated pool and a heated pool with a solar pool heater:

How many panels do I need to heat my pool?

For optimum performance in a south-facing roof installation, the total area of the solar collectors should be 50% of the pool area. The amount of solar panels required to heat the water in your pool will depend on its size and the orientation of your roof, the ideal orientation being facing south. Your roof is not facing south? No problem, it will be possible to compensate by adding a certain amount of panels.

Here is the amount of panels recommended to heat your pool water efficiently:

Quantity of 4′ x 10′ solar panel required

Roof orientation
Pool size SOUTH WEST EAST
SQ. FT. 50% 75% 80%
18′ diameter 254 3 4 5
21′ diameter 346 4 5 6
24′ diameter 452 6 8 9
27′ diameter 572 7 11 12

This figure applies to southern Canada (for northern area, add 2 to 3 panels). Other factors may affect the number of panels needed: e.g. a pool in a shaded or windy location, the use of the pool cover, etc…. Optimize the roof area with different sizes of panels: e.g. 4′ x 5′, 4′ x 8′, 4′ x 9′, 4′ x 12′, etc…

Is the solar pool heater system compatible with salt systems ?

Yes for sure. The system works just as well with a salt system as with a chlorine system.

Does the solar pool heater system need an extra pump to operate ?

No, as part of a typical residential installation, a standard 1.5hp pool pump is powerful enough to ensure water circulation on the roof of a house up to 2 floors high.

How is the automatic system better than the manual system ?

The automatic system operates with an electronic controller, a motorized valve and sensors that measure water and roof temperatures. It maximizes the warming of the pool by circulating the water in the panels when there is heat to capture. Thus water will not circulate at night or when it is not sunny.

The manual system, meanwhile, operates through a manual valve that must be opened in the morning and closed at night. If the forecast is not accurate and the sun does not show up during the day, you may cool your pool. Even worse, if you forget to close the valve after sunset, you will cool your pool several degrees during the night.

Many of our customers who have opted originally for a manual system to avoid costs contact us after a few seasons to get an automatic system.

Will installing the collectors damage the roof and cause water infiltration ?

No, the screws used, designed specifically for roofing, are equipped with a gasket. Caulking is also applied before screwing, which ensures a perfect seal of the installation (see installation video below)

Can I install the system myself ?

Of course. If you are an handyman you will have no difficulty to perform the installation yourself.

Here is a video that explains how:

At what point a solar pool heating system is economical ?

Propane and natural gas pool heaters cost less to buy, propane is, however, the most expensive system to run, costing $ 1000 or more per season to maintain a steady water temperature, making it therefore advisable to plan on less frequent usage. Natural gas is only possible if the house is connected to an existing natural gas network.

The heat pump costs in-between $350 and $500 each year. It can be noisy and the apparatus will need to be replaced or reconditioned after 5 or 6 years.

Should I remove the solar panel for winter ?

No. The system, if properly installed, on an inclined roof, will drain by gravity, when will come the time to empty the filtration system at the end of the season. The panels are designed to withstand winter weather conditions in Quebec without any problem.
